Question: How Do I Pre-Populate Different Commission Rates by Salesperson Type in Dynamics GP?

Answer: There is a way to do this in Dynamics GP, but it requires thinking beyond native GP functionality.

Out of the box, GP allows you to assign a single Salesperson ID to a customer record, but it does not provide a way to automatically apply different commission calculation rules based on salesperson type. If managers earn differently than reps, or certain groups of salespeople follow different commission structures, those rules typically have to be managed manually.

Commission Plan solves this through salesperson classes. You can create classes such as “Rep” or “Manager” and assign a calculation method to each class. Every salesperson assigned to that class automatically inherits those commission rules. Update the class once, and all associated salespeople are updated automatically.

Example: You have 10 regional reps who each earn 5% on their sales, plus 3 managers who each earn 1.5% on everything their reps sell. In Commission Plan, you could create a “Rep” class with a 5% calculation method and a “Manager” class with a 1.5% calculation method. Assign salespeople to the appropriate class, and Commission Plan automatically applies the correct commission logic during processing. It also handles more complex real-world scenarios cleanly. If a manager also owns direct customer accounts, Commission Plan can calculate both the rep commission and manager commission correctly on the same sales document without requiring additional manual entry.
